Kindergarten At Amaroo School
Our Kindergarten program provides a
- Caring environment in which children feel safe and welsome
- Student centred curriculum focused on each child's learning needs
Our Kindergarten program is designed to provide foundational learning in literacy, numeracy and social skilling.
At Amaroo School we treat each child as an individual and cater for all their needs. This year we had kindergarten students who were reading and writing before they came to school and could add two digit numbers together. To cater for these students we established group activities in Literacy and Maths.
In Literacy, students are placed in a group which caters for their ability. In these groups, students work with a teacher on a book that is targeted at their reading level. We also assess the students and work on sight word lists that are aimed at their ability. In writing, all our lessons are open ended. This allows those students who are able to write to continue to improve on their skills. We also have many games that help students to build upon their spelling.
In Maths we use a program called Count Me in Too ! This program begins by individually testing the students using hands-on materials and then develops a program to cater for all needs.
We are extremely lucky to have SmartBoards in our classrooms. These interactive boards allow us to develop dynamic lessons and gain access to websites that highly motivate students at all levels. These websites are great for those students who need extension. The Emerald and Sapphires Terraces house the Kindergarten classrooms. They are situated next to the Pre-School and the staff work closely together to ensure a smooth transition into school for the children.
The Emerald and Sapphire Terraces
The Terraces have 8 classrooms that open out onto a central gathering area. These areas provides a safe place for children's bags and clothing as well as a large meeting area for the whole of Kindergarten for singing and play activities. The Terraces have a large multi-purpose space used for practical activities such as art, cooking and science.
Kindergarten Class Sizes
Our maximum class size in Kindergarten is 21 children per class. Our small class sizes ensure that teachers get to know each child very quickly and are able to more accurately develop programs that meet each child's learning needs.
Children are accepted into Kindergarten if they turn 5 years of age on or before 30 April. Early entry to school must be negotiated with the Director of Schools Northern Region (02 62057194).
