REPORT FROM THE PRINCIPALS
SUNNY DAYS AHEAD! 🌞
Welcome to this week's school newsletter, bursting with exciting updates and reminders!

👒 Sun Smart Returns!
With the sun shining bright, Sun Smart is back in action! All our lovely primary school students are reminded to wear their hats during break times. Looking for a trendy hat? We've got you covered! Brilliant bucket hats are up for grabs via Flexi Schools. Make sure your child is both stylish and sun-protected!

🕰️ Punctuality Matters!
A friendly reminder to all our amazing parents: our back gates will be locked sharp at 9:15 am. If you're cutting it close, please make sure to drop your students at the front of the school. Let's ensure everyone's safety and punctuality as it’s a long walk around to the front of the school from the back car park!
📚 A Huge Applause for Book Week!
Kudos to our Book Week organisers! Their dedication has once again left us in awe. With over 1,000 books gathered for the book swap, it's heartening to see so many students swapping and taking books every morning. The school-wide Book Week assembly and parade were EPIC! The sight of our students dressing up, the enthusiasm, and the generous funds raised for the Indigenous Literacy Fund was nothing short of spectacular. Thank you for making it a grand success!
🌸 Director General's Visit
Last Friday, we were honoured to host the Director General of Education, Katy Haire, as a part of the National Day against Bullying. Katy took a hands-on approach, mingling with our students and planting "Friendship Flowers." But what truly touched our hearts was watching her read out the pledges our students made to combat bullying. If you've noticed the vibrant paper chains decorating our school's front office, those are the very pledges our students made! A beautiful and symbolic representation of unity against bullying.
📚 A Visit from the Deputy Director
This Thursday, we were graced by the presence of the Deputy Director of Education, Jane Simmons. Eager to witness the exemplary work of our students in Building Foundations, Jane spent quality time understanding our methodologies and interacting with our enthusiastic learners. Alongside her was Karen Duncan, touring the school and engaging in heart-to-heart conversations with our students. They explored topics like future employment prospects, what keeps our students engaged in school, and the exciting opportunities in vocational education. The highlight was the spirited talk about the careers expo. It's always a joy to see our students so eager about their future!

We're incredibly proud of the recognition our school and students receive. Such visits not only motivate our students but also remind us of the impact we're making in the education sector.

💳 Cashless Payments, Please!
Parents, please note that all payments to our school's front office for excursions are now cashless. For your convenience, you can use Quickweb or opt for Credit Card/EFTPOS in person. We're moving with the times!

📩 School Satisfaction Survey
A quick nod to the email sent out last week from the Education Directorate. If you've got a couple of minutes to spare, we would truly appreciate your feedback on our school satisfaction survey. Remember, your voice shapes our future! And for our students in years 4-10, it's their time to shine next week. They'll be sharing their thoughts via an online survey. We use this valuable data to set our goals and improvement agenda. The more feedback we get, the better we can serve our wonderful community.

🏅 Jumping to New Heights – Our World-Class Skippers!
Hold onto your hats, folks, because this update is truly awe-inspiring! I recently had the privilege of interviewing our magnificent skippers who jetted off to America to represent not just Amaroo, but the whole of Australia, and boy, did they make us proud! As part of the Jazzy Jumpers team, these seven stellar students leaped, skipped, and jumped their way to becoming the 4th best in the WORLD! Yes, you read that right – 4th in the entire globe!

Their journey wasn't just about representing our school and country; they came back with an extra suitcase that jingled with the sound of success – laden with medals! A whopping 10 bronze, 7 silvers, and 3 glittering gold medals are now a testament to their hard work, dedication, and immense talent.

But that's not all! These champions even took out some time to teach yours truly about the world's most challenging skipping trick, aptly named "The Money Maker". And while it might've taken me three tries to get the hang of it 😉 (okay, it was super challenging!), it was an exhilarating experience.

A huge shout-out to our skippers, Grace and Chloe B, Emily O, Tilly and Cam W, Lana K and Kate C for not just winning medals, but also for being such wonderful ambassadors and coaches. Amaroo is bursting with pride!

Aqua Safe - Year 2
Year two had a fantastic time last week at Gungahlin Leisure Centre participating in the Aquasafe program that is run by the Royal Life Saving Society. The students participated in many activities learning about water safety and survival skills. A few highlights included floating with life jackets, working together to get in and out of the mini boats and of course singing on the bus! Make sure to ask your child about all the things they learnt throughout the week.

Regards
Ed, Nic and Prue
Rostrum - Semi Finals
Amaroo School's Year 4 student, Avni S, represented our school at the Rostrum Semi Finals on Wednesday 16 August at Harrison School. Avni competed against 6 other finalists and delivered a well prepared, engaging speech about 'Digging Deeper'. Avni spoke with clarity and confidence. She used quotes, rhetorical questions, hand gestures, and expression to engage the audience.

(On a side note, the judges loved that her little sister in kindergarten mouthed all the words as Avni spoke and did all the hand gestures that Avni did. You can tell Avni practised her little heart out at home, her sister even knew the speech word for word! So proud!!)

Anvi will now write a new speech and prepare for Grand Final! Congratulations Avni!

World Dragon Boat Championships
Angus T Year 10 recently returned from competing for the Australian Auroras u18 team in the World Dragon Boat Championships in Pattaya, Thailand. The event saw teams from around the world compete over six sweltering days, in 1km, 2km, 500m and 200m races. Angus brought home three bronze medals for his events, which contributed to the Australian team finishing 5th out of 31 countries for all age groups. A great effort all around.
LEARNING SPOTLIGHT - DIAMOND
Welcome to our Week 6 ‘Learning Spotlight’! Each newsletter we will feature a ‘learning spotlight’ from one of our areas across primary.  We will share with you their words and reflections of why the learning we do at school is important and why it matters. Join me in celebrating our students thinking about their learning.

What have you been learning about?
DSBG students: We have been learning to move our bodies safely whilst playing soccer. We have embraced the World Cup spirit!

Why is this learning important?
Mr Saleh and Mr Burke: A couple of weeks ago, the Diamond classes had athletes from Capital Football run an All-Abilities Football Clinic for our Primary Diamond students. We got to participate in lots of skills and social based games, which the students had a lot of fun doing. It was a great opportunity for us to build on our learning around the FIFA Women’s World Cup and to try emulate our favourite soccer stars.

LEARNING SPOTLIGHT - SECONDARY
Building Foundations Students Adding Value!
Mr Laaring’s Building Foundations students have been working on projects that are making a difference around the school.

Recently they made a class set of Slope-Boards to help junior Primary students with their hand-writing and they’ve proved so popular that they’ve been asked to create another set for use throughout the primary school.

Another recently completed project was the construction of new Lost Property boxes for the school.  Here’s a picture of Ms O’Malley testing one out.
POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING (PBL) FOCUS
Teachers have been busy rewarding positive student behaviour in and out of the classrooms this semester!
So far this year we’ve handed out:
  • 50,779 Safe positives,
  • 59,301 Respectful positives,
  • 58,549 Responsible positives, and
  • 65,422 Learner positives.
In total, our students have recieved an incredible 234,051 positives!
Our wonderful students have earned 30, 211 more positives than had been earned this time last year – what an amazing effort!

We look forward to continuing to reward positive behaviours over the next semester.

CAPTAINS REPORT - PRIMARY
Hi Amaroo! Primary Captains here, Laura and Levi. It’s Book Week here, we have had many visitors to our Great Book Swap every morning, thank you for all the donations. The Scholastic Book Fair has also been busy with parents visiting the Inspire Centre to buy even more books! It is clear that students at Amaroo School love reading. Today we all wore our Book Week costumes, it is always fun to dress up and celebrate the wonderful stories authors write for us.

Lunchtime clubs led by our School and Sports Captains have been going smoothly, with lots of involvement and fun from students. Students in years 4-6 who are participating in Tournament of Minds, also known as TOMs, have been working hard all term to present their response to the judges at ANU this Saturday. We wish them luck in this exciting competition!

Amaroo’s Got Talent is in Week 10, auditions for students who have fancy skills and talents have been called. We are looking forward to seeing the unique abilities of students in our school. Students present marvellous talents such as Magic tricks, Skipping, Singing, Dancing and so much more.

Market Day is coming up on the 13th of September, Week 9 this term. Everyone is excited to participate, whether they’re selling goods like fun treats, cookies, milk-shakes, sausages, selling items like bracelets, crafts, origami or services, like competitions and games. Year 6 students have been conducting product surveys as part of market research for their small business to make sure they sell what the customers will buy! This has created lots of excitement within the primary for students to attend the special event. Year 6 parents will be invited to attend the first hour of Market Day as part of Year 6’s Learning Expo. Notes went out this week for families to pre-purchase tickets as cash for the day. Please ask your child’s class teacher if you did not get this note. This is a cashless event.

We want to remind everyone about wearing their uniform proudly. This is a PBL expectation at our school. We must wear navy and red exclusively. We do not wear grey, black or sports branded clothes. We also need to ask that everyone makes an effort to bring a hat to school every day. Although it still feels cold, the UV level is rising and we need students to wear hats to be able to play. Teachers will be sending home notes to families if students are not wearing a hat at break times, PE lessons and fitness. Please help us to be sun safe. Our very new, cool hats are available to buy through Flexischools.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Laura and Levi
