NAIDOC WEEK
The theme for this year’s NAIDOC week is ‘For the Elders’. We held a P-10 assembly and morning tea that was attended by Elders from our community. Some students had written letters for the Elders and shared their thoughts and gratitude for this amazing country that we live on. Primary and Secondary students have had the opportunity to contribute to large shared artworks, explore artefacts, decorate leaves and hands, and play First Nations games at break times this week.

BOOK WEEK CELEBRATIONS
Book Week is just around the corner, and Amaroo couldn't be more excited! During week 6 our school will be transformed into a magical world of stories, adventures, and imagination as we celebrate the joy of reading.

This year's theme is " Read Grow Inspire" and we have planned a range of engaging and enriching activities to ignite a passion for reading in our students. One of the highlights of Book Week is our "Dress Up as Your Favourite Book Character" day which will be held on Friday 25th August. Students and staff are encouraged to step into the shoes of their beloved literary heroes and heroines. Whether it's Harry Potter, Matilda, the Cat in the Hat, or any other character from a well-loved book, we can't wait to see the creativity, originality and enthusiasm on display!

PLAYGROUP
We are seeking interest from families about attending a playgroup for children who do not yet attend preschool. If you are interested, please fill in the following survey.

Celebrating Our School's Remarkable Achievement in the Education Perfect Mathematics Competition!
We are incredibly proud to announce that our school has achieved an outstanding victory in the Education Perfect Mathematics competition, securing the top spot nationally among 1,103 participating schools! Not only that, but our students' exceptional performance also earned us an impressive third place globally. This achievement is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and talent of our students and teachers alike.

During the competition, our students demonstrated their exceptional mathematical prowess by answering a remarkable 177,475 questions correctly. Their commitment to mastering mathematical concepts and problem-solving skills is truly commendable and showcases the passion they have for learning and excelling in their studies.

Furthermore, we are thrilled to highlight the extraordinary efforts of nine of our students who achieved the highest honour of the Elite Level award. This accolade is a testament to their determination and relentless pursuit of excellence in the field of mathematics. Their accomplishments have not only brought pride to our school but also served as an inspiration to their peers.

We owe a special thanks to Ms Pauline Luchetti and our dedicated team of mathematics teachers and staff who have worked tirelessly to nurture and support our students' academic growth. Their commitment to providing an enriching and stimulating learning environment has played a pivotal role in this remarkable achievement.

This remarkable achievement in the Education Perfect Mathematics competition reinforces our school's commitment to fostering a culture of academic excellence and a passion for learning among our students.

We will continue to strive for greatness, ensuring that each student receives the best possible education and support to achieve their fullest potential.
LEARNING SPOTLIGHT - AMAROO SCHOOL BAND
This term is a huge term for our musicians at Amaroo School! Our choir has been busy preparing for Limelight, a big performance at Llewellin Hall with many other schools on the 7th of September. They have been working very hard in their weekly choir sessions and are looking forward to the big night!

Our Year 5 and 6 bands have also been hard at work, both getting ready for combined practices and performances at Ngunnawal with their woodwind bands. Both bands are also very excited for their upcoming performance at Floriade in week 10. Our Year 5 band have been practising the songs, ‘Penguin Parade’ and ‘5 Note Boogey’, while the year 6 band has been working on ‘Chariots of Fire’ and ‘Supercalifragialisticexpialadocious’.

We have also been busy in music classes, learning songs, practising instruments and playing musical games. Our Year 2 students have been enjoying the song, ‘Famous Rock Drummer’, and getting up to have a turn at the big snare drum. Our Year 5 students have also been excited to finally get a chance to learn the ukulele!

Well done to all of the musicians at Amaroo for their commitment to musical learning!
LEARNING SPOTLIGHT - SCIENCE
Amaroo Secondary Students recently visited Questacon.  The students were guided by enthusiastic and engaging facilitators from Questacon and participated in an interactive and challenging STEM workshops exposing them to innovation and iterative design processes.

Working in teams, they were challenged to design shapes for flight. They solved problems and were encouraged to make, and refine their ideas through hands-on prototyping, developing their creative problem-solving skills. They could test their ideas in wind tunnels. All students were engaged by the learning experience.
AUSTRALIAN LITERACY NATIONAL CONFERENCE
At the beginning of the holidays many Amaroo primary and secondary English teachers attended the AATE ALEA National Conference. As well as attending Dr Olivia Radford presented on “Assessment in the English classroom: the intersection of theory and practice”.  And Mrs Jo Cook presented alongside ex student Mirabel on “From Premise, to Project, to Publication”. Our teachers were able to deepen their knowledge of English and Literacy teaching and will be bringing what they learnt back into our classrooms.

SCHOOL CAPTAINS REPORT
Welcome to Week 2, Semester 2!

In Week 10 of Term 2, all Year 10 students, and some Year 9 students, were given the opportunity to participate in the Pre-Learner Licence Course. They attended the two-day theory course, engaging in class discussions, and learning how to be safe drivers on the road. Afterwards, the students had the chance to take the knowledge test. Congratulations to all those who passed the test! Happy driving!

Last Friday, we had a whole-school assembly for NAIDOC Week, a time when we honour the culture, history, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year's 2023 NAIDOC theme is “For our elders”, and we were grateful to have some special guests in attendance. Throughout this week, various activities were organized, including opportunities to contribute to art projects and participate in Aboriginal games. We hope that everyone learned something this week about the rich and diverse Aboriginal culture.

We’re looking forward to our upcoming CareersXpo on the 9th of August, where our Year 9 and 10 students will be able to explore different career and educational opportunities. This event is designed to provide our Year 9 and 10 students with valuable insights into various career pathways, empowering them to make future education and career choices. At the expo, there will be information from various fields, universities, and vocational institutions offering insights into potential careers. We are excited to see everyone on the day!

Upcoming events this term include Book Week and Science Week, in Weeks 6 and 5, respectively, and there will be a range of activities during these weeks for students to participate in with a big dress up day scheduled for Week 6 Friday!  Funds are being raised for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.  We will also be looking to collect books for the bookswap happening throughout Week 6.  There will be a box in the front office where students can donate books!

We hope everyone had a good start to the term and is looking forward to the semester ahead.
