Tournament of Minds
Congratulations to Mrs, Keegan and the Primary students who competed in the final of the Tournament of the Minds competition two weeks ago. The students were required to present their original project response and were also asked to complete a spontaneous challenge. The team were presented with Finalist Certificates and Honours badges at this week’s assembly.

What are our staff working on in Term 4?
In Term 4, we are prioritising the transition to the Australian Curriculum Version 9.0 which affects our learning programs from Kindergarten to Year 10. The latest Australian Curriculum Review made improvements to the Foundation to Year 10 curriculum by refining, realigning and decluttering the content.

The Australian Curriculum, Version 9.0 is a more stripped-back and teachable curriculum that identifies the essential content our children should learn.

Overall, there’s a reduction in content, as well as better alignment between achievement standards and content descriptions, and improved links between learning areas and the general capabilities and cross-curriculum priorities.

https://v9.australiancurriculum.edu.au/

Summary of key changes
  • the removal and reduction of content so the curriculum can be taught with depth and rigour, including a 21% reduction in the number of content descriptions, which describe what is to be taught and what students are expected to learn
  • a stronger focus on phonics in English
  • a stronger focus on students mastering the essential mathematical facts, skills, concepts and processes, and being introduced to these at the right time
  • making clear what mathematical computations need to be done without a calculator, reinforcing the importance of achieving proficiency in foundational skills
  • a revision of the sequencing of content in Mathematics; in particular, telling time, introduction of fractions, recall of multiplication facts (“times tables’) and solving equations
  • lifting standards for Mathematics in Year 1 in relation to addition and subtraction, with additional content setting expectations about recall and proficiency with multiplication facts, beginning in  Year 2
  • prioritising Australian history within a global context in Years 9 and 10
  • deepening students’ understanding of First Nations Australian histories and cultures, the impact on - and perspectives of - First Nations Australians of the arrival of British settlers as well as their contribution to the building of modern Australia
  • strengthening and making explicit teaching about the origins and Christian and Western heritage of Australia's democracy, as well as about the diversity of Australian communities
  • strengthening the explicit teaching of consent and respectful relationships from F–10 in age-appropriate ways
  • addition of privacy and security in the Digital Technologies curriculum
  • strengthening the focus on students being physically active and increased content with a focus on activity in natural and outdoor settings
  • strengthening the Foundation year by identifying the essential content to teach in the first year of school across all 8 learning areas

Term 3 break
We wish everyone a safe and restful Term 3 break. We look forward to another successful term of learning and end of year celebrations with our graduating students in Term 4.

Regards
Rebecca, Ed and  Nic
EP REGIONAL LANGUAGE CHAMPIONSHIPS
Mrs Middleton’s Year 9 Japanese class were very excited to celebrate being the ‘top class’ in the recent Regional Language Championship. They won a $100 Coles voucher and enjoyed a range of yummy snacks, trying lots of Japanese ones for the first time. The wasabi peas were particularly popular! Year 9 also invited the top point scorers in the Championship for the Year 8 French class. Congratulations to all of these students and everyone who competed in the Championship! Great work!

YEAR 7 CAMP
The staff on Year 7 camp have been incredibly impressed with the overwhelming support and care students have provided each other to overcome hurdles and challenges, especially when completing activities using high ropes. Students are taking every opportunity to step out of their comfort zones and taking risks to grow their confidence and resilience. Our campers have shown their ability to work in a team, cooperating and collaborating to achieve a shared outcome. They have displayed respect and maturity going above and beyond by tidying up after breaks and cleaning down spaces and messes that they themselves did not make.

LEARNING SPOTLIGHT - PRIMARY
All primary students worked hard during AFL clinics and PE during the term learning new skill sets. The students worked on the positioning of their hands on the oval ball in both kicking and handballing. They practised kicking skills utilised in AFL such as -  drop punts, bananas, torpedoes and curved dribble kicks. They also worked on handballing and marking the ball. Students continued their development in head safety with the use of picking up the football side-on in eliminating the high percentage of a head clash when contesting for a loose ball.

Students in 5/6 competed in the AFL finals representing Amaroo. They thoroughly enjoyed the learning experience in communication, teamwork and using their skills in adapting to different opposition team tactics. All students are encouraged to continue practising their skill sets learnt during the AFL clinics and PE lessons. Also, a big congratulations to all students for their improvement in ball skills.
