REPORT FROM THE PRINCIPALS
It is Week 6 and Amaroo School students and staff are in the process of reflecting on the learning of Semester 1. Academic reports will be emailed home on Friday Week 9 (Primary) and Wednesday Week 10 (Secondary). School reports are a great tool to help you understand how your child is going with their learning. Achievement, in semester reports, means locating a student on a continuum of learning for a learning area (or capability) by making an on-balance, holistic, evidence-based and defensible judgement of assessment evidence gathered during a reporting period.

The results in your child’s school report will tell you how they have performed in school assessments over the semester. However, the comments from your child’s teachers can give you a clearer picture about their overall learning disposition, attitude, effort and academic performance.

Teacher comments for preschool will capture a child’s learning and development mapped to the Early Years Learning Framework. In K-6, teachers will describe and share student’s personal attributes, ‘Learner asset’ development and areas of personal/social growth. Primary reports will also reflect in detail on a student’s progress and achievement in literacy, with reading being a foundational skill for all other learning areas. The development of teacher reading practice and improvement in reading achievement for students is one of the school’s goals. We want to celebrate and explain in detail each child’s reading ability and the identified next steps to progress, improve and deepen comprehension, knowledge and skills.

In Secondary, AmCares teachers have been conferencing and talking with students to understand each student’s learning achievement/growth and opportunities for growth from Semester 1. AmCares teachers liaise and communicate with subject teachers to craft a report comment that individualises the learning that has occurred and what the goals for future learning will be.

Discussing school reports openly with your child is an opportunity to celebrate their successes and help them improve their academic performance. Reports are written with a focus on the positives and what a student ‘can do’ – praise your child for the areas they have excelled in, where they have shown improvements, and acknowledge their effort and achievements. At Amaroo School we foster a ‘growth mindset’ and celebrate effort and persistence in learning and learning challenges. We are proud of students for trying hard at school, whatever their marks because we know this will inspire them to keep at it. Letting your child know that you are proud of them also and are there to support them will continue to develop self-direction and accountability.

STUDENT LED CONFERENCES (KINDERGARTEN - YEAR 6)
In weeks 9 and 10, we invite students and their families to attend the ‘Student Led Conferences’. An email will be sent to families on Tuesday (Week 7) providing details on how to book a Student Led Conference. These conferences are an opportunity for your child to own their learning and success and share this with you. Teachers will also encourage conversation and discussion about Semester 2 learning goals.

ACADEMIC AND ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS (YEARS 7-10)
In Week 9, (Friday 23 June) we invite parents and carers of secondary students to attend our final assembly for the semester which will take place at 9am in the Amaroo School Gym. This assembly will include the presentation of Academic and Achievement awards. Invitations will be sent to the parents and carers of children who will be receiving an award on this day.

MANAGING STAFF ABSENCES
As the colder weather sets in, we expect to see a higher number of staff away at times due to seasonal illness and COVID-19.  To ensure that we continue to provide all students with quality learning with minimal disruption, we may be implementing temporary changes to our learning programs. If required, some classes may be combined for short periods of time. We may also deliver student self-directed learning onsite using either online modules such as Google classroom or hard copy resources.

The school may also take the opportunity to temporarily modify timetables or work with external providers to deliver some programs. There may also be a need to postpone excursions and other extra-curricular activities until there is enough staff to support them.  Every school will implement these measures differently and will have the flexibility to make choices that best meet the needs of their school community.

If changes are required at our school at any time, we will write to you to let you know. We will also ensure we keep you up to date on how long we expect any changes to be in place.

As always, we remain committed to providing our students with high quality learning experiences in a safe and welcoming school environment. Thank you for your understanding.
STAYING COVID SMART IN 2023
To help minimise the spread of COVID-19 and other illnesses in our school please remember the following:

•    Students who are COVID-19 positive or displaying symptoms
(including a runny nose, sore throat, cough, fever) should test
and must not attend school while unwell.
•    If a student is COVID-positive let us know.
•    Practise good hand and respiratory hygiene.
•    Keep up to date with vaccinations.

You can access free rapid antigen tests from the front office. Nasal and saliva tests are available.
For the latest COVID-19 advice please visit the ACT’s COVID-19 website.

STRANGER AWARENESS SAFETY MESSAGE
This is a reminder to ensure your children and young people understand the importance of stranger awareness safety.

Please support us to keep our children safe by having conversations about moving safely around the community. You may wish to visit the Australian Federal Police website section on Child Safety for tips. In addition, the Safety4Kids is a non-government website that has useful information and links. The Constable Kenny website also has a number of tips for parents for younger children.

If you become aware of an incident or notice anyone acting suspiciously around a school or student, contact police immediately on 131 444 or in the case of an emergency call 000. If you witness an incident or if you have any information that could assist police, contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Information can be provided anonymously. We would also ask that you notify the school so we can also support the wider school community to be aware of incidents.

Regards
Cindie, Nic and Ed

LEARNING SPOTLIGHT - YEAR 6
Welcome to our Week 6 ‘Learning spotlight’! Each newsletter we will feature a ‘learning spotlight’ from one of our grades across primary.  We will share with you their words and reflections of why the learning we do at school is important and why it matters. Join me in celebrating our students thinking about their learning.

Student interview - Cameron 6TBJ
Learning area - Inquiry (HASS/ Science) - Why are places different?

What have you been learning about?
In integrated inquiry this term we have been learning about different cultures, what they eat and what they traditionally wear. We have created posters to showcase our learning on a culture of our choice. I have been researching Sri Lanka, and I have found out lots of interesting facts about the culture. They speak two languages in the country. One language is Sinhala which 69% of the people speak and Tamil is spoken by only 25%. They also write in Sinhala script which looks like symbols.

Why is this learning important?
It’s important to learn about different cultures around the world, so we can get a deeper understanding of their knowledge. We can also understand and respect other cultures' views and beliefs and religions.

How did you take this learning further?
We have been comparing Australian culture to the other cultures around the world. We have been making menus to describe what foods our country's traditionally eat and comparing them to what we traditionally eat here in Australia. We have also been using Atlases to research what landmarks are in our chosen countries.  We have represented our countries on a map to scale using geographical coordinates.
CAPTAINS REPORT
This term, we held assemblies for both ANZAC Day and Reconciliation Day. We thank the special guests who came to the school on these days and appreciate their contribution to our assemblies.

On Wednesday 3 May (Week 2), we held our Information evening for Year 7 students in 2024. Parents and students were shown around the school and greeted by teachers and secondary student helpers. Additionally, we held Q&A sessions with our current Year 6 students and had current Year 7 students answering questions alongside Year 10s. We look forward to continuing to assist the Year 6s with their transition into high school.

We had a great time participating in Buddies in Week 3, with students from Preschool to Year 10 being involved. During this event, we had the opportunity to work together on fun activities and support younger students. Some of the activities that took place included science experiments and arts and crafts related to our school's PBL values. We are very excited to see our buddies again soon.
In Week 4, the Outdoor Education Aquatics class enjoyed a day of Dragon Boating at Lake Burley Griffin. Students had the opportunity to try this fun sport and connect with others on the water. This is one of the many excursions the Outdoor Education Aquatics class has participated in this semester, successfully providing students with different experiences to improve their skills and step outside of their comfort zones.
On Friday of Week 1, our secondary students went to the Mount Stromlo track for the Cross-Country Carnival. We enjoyed a day of running, leisure activities, and a sausage sizzle and bake sale organised by our formal committee. Congratulations to all students who participated on the day, and we look forward to sharing the results of those who attended the Northside Regional Cross Country Carnival shortly. After the success of this carnival, everyone has been eager for our Athletics Carnival, which will take place today, Friday of Week 6.

In addition to the exciting events and activities happening at our school, we would like to highlight the significant role played by our Student Representative Council (SRC) in both the high school and primary school. The SRC has been actively involved in various initiatives aimed at fostering student leadership and engagement within our school community including the purchasing of blue paper recycling bins for every high school classroom.  Thanks again to the P&C for their generosity in support of this project.

Another exciting development is the printing of each student's leadership role on the school jumpers. This initiative allows every student to proudly showcase their contribution and position within the school. We extend our gratitude to Mr. Rummukainen, Ms. De Graaf, and Ms. Booksmythe for their continuous support and guidance in facilitating this endeavour. Students have the option to use their current school jumper or purchase a new one from the uniform shop to display their leadership roles. We encourage all students who represent the school in a leadership capacity to embrace this opportunity and wear their jumpers with pride, reflecting the spirit of leadership and unity that defines our school.

During this peak assessment period, we hope that all students are keeping up with their work and enjoying the rest of the term!
