REPORT FROM THE PRINCIPALS
Wow! We have made it to the end of Semester 1! Congratulations to all Amaroo learners for their effort and persistence in learning new things this year. Thank you to our teaching staff who have designed and planned wonderful learning opportunities for our students. With academic reports coming home over the past week, we hope that learning and sharing of success and growth has been a conversation in your home.

We would like to thank and farewell a few staff as they move on to new things or take leave for an extended time -
  • Thank you to Mr. Kyle Baulman for acting as the Deputy Principal of Wellbeing for 7-10 throughout Term 2. Mr Baulman will be returning to his role in the Directorate with the PBL team.
  • Thank you to Mr. Jim Gray, we wish you well at your new school, Ainslie School as Deputy Principal.
  • Thank you to Mrs. Raye Down for supporting our school community with inclusion and our small group programs.
  • Thank you Ms. Chelsey Laird, we wish you well in your teaching position in Japan!
  • Thank you to Mrs. Naomi Goode who has won a substantive position at Campbell High School.
  • Thank you to Mary Scougall and Jessica Berry for all of their hard work contributing to our school community!
  • Welcome Mr Vikash Chand who has won the SLC of Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) in the Secondary School.
Last Friday, our school community came together to celebrate an inspiring and successful Academic and Endeavor Awards Ceremony for secondary students. It was a wonderful occasion as we recognised and applauded the outstanding achievements of our students throughout the semester.  Many thanks for all the parents who came to bear witness to their children receiving awards.  A big thankyou to the languages faculty for organising the event. We commend all the recipients of the awards for their dedication, hard work, and commitment to excellence. Their achievements serve as a shining example for all of us.

We would also like to congratulate and acknowledge some very talented artists from Amaroo School who last week were awarded prizes as part of the H2OK DrainART Competition.  This initiative was launched at Amaroo School earlier this year and is designed to draw attention to how our actions at home and in the streets affect the health of our waterways. Amaroo School students won more prizes than any other school, including the overall grand prize – The Minister’s Prize won by Jiwon H. The winning designs will be added to the tops of drains in the suburb of their choice, so you may possibly see some of these amazing designs near Amaroo!

We are very proud of all the students who entered and thank all the staff involved in coordinating the submission of student entries. More information on the winners across each category and links to news articles featuring these amazing designs can be found in the Spotlight below.
ROSTRUM PUBLIC SPEAKING QUARTER FINALS
Congratulations to Avni S (Year 4) who won the Rostrum quarter finals held at Good Shepherd last week and will be representing Amaroo School in the next round! We are incredibly proud of Avni who spoke with clarity and confidence! We know that she has been practising every night for the past 4 weeks (her younger sister even knows all the words).
In addition to the awards ceremony, this week also saw our Year 10 students completing their Pre-Driver Awareness Program. This program plays a crucial role in equipping our students with the knowledge and skills necessary to become responsible and safe drivers. We are proud of our Year 10 students for their engagement and commitment to promoting road safety. We believe that this program will have a lasting positive impact on their lives.  A big thankyou to Ms Duncan and Ms Lazarides for organising and coordinating the program.

STUDENT ACADEMIC REPORTS - SEMESTER 1 2023
We would like to inform parents that student academic reports for this semester were sent home on Friday 23 June (Primary) and Wednesday 28 June (Secondary). These reports provide valuable insights into your child's progress, strengths, and areas for improvement. We encourage parents to review these reports with their children, celebrate their achievements, and discuss strategies for further growth. Our dedicated teachers and support staff have worked tirelessly to ensure the accuracy and thoroughness of these reports, and we are grateful for their commitment to our students' academic success.

If you have not received your child’s report please ensure that you have notified the school of any changes to contact details (ie changes to phone numbers, email addresses or your home address). This can be done by emailing info@amaroos.act.edu.au. For emergency and correspondence purposes, it is important that these details are correct. If you have any questions please contact the Front Office
on 6142 1266.

STUDENT LED CONFERENCES (PRESCHOOL - YEAR 6)
Thank you to all the families you attended the Student Led Conferences over the last two weeks. It was a wonderful opportunity for the students to showcase their learning. If you were unable to attend and would like to meet with your child’s teacher please contact the teacher via email.
STUDENT ELECTIVES FOR SEMESTER 2 2023
As we approach the end of the semester, we are excited to announce that the student electives for years 8, 9 and 10 for Semester 2 have been emailed out to all student school accounts. This presents a wonderful opportunity for our students to explore their interests, develop new skills, and broaden their horizons. Their new timetables will be distributed in their first Amcares lesson on Monday morning 17 July (Week 1 of Term 3). We encourage all students to carefully consider their elective choices and make the most of the diverse range of options available to them. We are confident that these electives will provide a stimulating and enriching experience for all.

ONLINE SAFETY
We would like to take this opportunity to mention that in today's digital age, it is crucial for parents to stay vigilant and engaged in their child's online activities. Social media platforms have become an integral part of our students' lives, offering both benefits and potential risks. We strongly encourage parents to regularly check in on their child's social media accounts, ensuring they are aware of what their child is watching, typing, and who they are communicating with. Open and honest conversations about responsible digital citizenship, online safety, and the importance of maintaining privacy settings can go a long way in ensuring a safe and positive online experience for our students. By actively monitoring and engaging with their child's online presence, parents can provide guidance and support, fostering a healthy digital environment for their children.  If you need some help or advice in regards to this there are several websites that are a great first port of call:

Both Religious Education programs will continue in Term 3 and any interested families are invited to complete the registration/ permission forms included in the buttons below. Please note: any families wishing to participate in the Islamic Education program will also need to register with ACTIES (see note for more details).

LEARNING SPOTLIGHT - YEAR 4
Welcome to our Week 10 ‘Learning spotlight’! Each newsletter we will feature a ‘learning spotlight’ from one of our grades across primary.  We will share with you their words and reflections of why the learning we do at school is important and why it matters. Join me in celebrating our students' thinking about their learning.

Student interview  - Emily G from 4LBT
Learning area - Inquiry

What have you been learning about?
In Inquiry this term we have been learning about different types of materials used in sports. We have been doing lots of activities involving looking at different materials and what they are used for. Our teachers have been helping us to research and also helping us to ‘fact check’ whether our information is correct or not. Some of the activities we have done are looking at what different types of balls used in sports have been made out of and their properties, and also looking at how materials in sport have evolved over time.

Why is this learning important?
If we join a specific industry for our jobs in the future we already know what different materials are made out of. We can also check whether materials are eco safe or not. It also helps us to recognise why different materials are used for different purposes.

How did you take this learning further?
By researching further. We researched lots of different materials and their uses rather than just the ones being used in sports. We have a good understanding of why different materials are used for items in our world and their properties. Our teachers have been very helpful.
NETBALL GALA DAYS
Over the past 2 weeks a small group of our Year 3/4 and 5/6 students represented Amaroo School  in the North/Gungahlin Region Netball Gala Day.  It was heart warming to see our experienced players teaching and guiding the students that had never played before, the students that were new to netball did an exceptional job picking up the skills and rules.  Everyone had a fantastic time and demonstrated wonderful sportsmanship and teamwork.
LEARNING SPOTLIGHT - LANGUAGES
Greetings, fellow language enthusiasts! We are thrilled to share with you the latest exciting endeavours taking place in our language classrooms. Students have embarked on a remarkable journey, fusing culinary delights and artistic expression to bring a taste of Japan and a burst of colour to our beloved languages building.

In a heart-warming collaboration, students from various language classes joined forces to immerse themselves in Japanese culture and celebrate their shared passion for art. Together, they gathered in the armed with their aprons, paintbrushes, and, of course, the essential ingredients for making Japanese rice balls, also known as onigiri.

Under the guidance of Ms Middleton, Ms Laird and Ms Hodson, the students ventured into the world of Japanese cuisine. They learned about the significance of rice in Japanese culture and the artistry involved in crafting these delightful treats. Armed with this newfound knowledge, they embraced the challenge, eagerly rolling rice in their hands and creating bite-sized masterpieces.

JAPANESE RICE BALL RECIPE

Ingredients:
  • 2 cups Japanese sushi rice
  • 2 1/4 cups water
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • Fillings of your choice (e.g., pickled plum, grilled salmon, cooked vegetables, or seasoned seaweed)

Instructions:
  1. Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Drain well.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine the rinsed rice and water. Let it sit for 30 minutes to allow the rice to absorb some of the water.
  3. Cover the saucepan with a tight-fitting lid and bring the rice to a boil over high heat. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 15 minutes. Remove from heat and let it sit, covered, for an additional 10 minutes.
  4. While the rice is cooking, prepare the seasoning mixture by combining rice vinegar, sugar, and salt in a small bowl. Stir until the sugar and salt dissolve.
  5. Transfer the cooked rice to a large bowl and drizzle the seasoning mixture over it. Mix gently and thoroughly to evenly distribute the seasoning.
  6. Allow the rice to cool slightly until it's comfortable to handle.
  7. Moisten your hands with water to prevent sticking. Take a small handful of rice and gently shape it into a triangle or round shape, creating a hollow in the centre.
  8. Add your preferred filling into the hollowed centre of the rice and gently fold the rice over it, ensuring the filling is fully enclosed.
  9. Repeat the process with the remaining rice and fillings.
Your delicious Japanese rice balls are ready to be enjoyed! Serve them fresh or wrap them in seaweed for an added touch of authenticity.

Alongside their culinary adventures, these creative students also dedicated their artistic talents to transforming a plain wall in the languages building into a vibrant mural. Inspired by the diversity of languages taught within the department, the mural captures the essence of global communication, with colourful imagery and empowering messages.

SCHOOL CAPTAINS REPORT
Hi everyone! Laura and Levi here. We wanted to congratulate everyone on their learning and achievements over the semester. It is crazy how fast the term has passed. Academic reports went home by email on Friday last week. This week all families are invited to come to school with their child/children and talk with their classroom teacher about their learning. These are called Student Led Conferences. At Amaroo, we, the students, want to demonstrate how we are responsible for our effort in learning. In these conferences we share the learning that we are most proud of and discuss the areas we want to improve in.

Throughout this term all students from P-6 researched and unpacked concepts about Sustainability. This is reflected in our learning environments which you may have seen when you visited classrooms this week. Students in P-6 have been learning about how to help and save our environment, water usage, animal habitats, conservation, changes to the Earth’s surface and creating sustainable items to improve the school’s impact on the environment.

Term 2 saw the completion of all school based carnivals as well as regional and ACT. Amaroo School had 51 represented at zone carnivals. Well done! Our Cross Country held here at school was a big hit and everyone enjoyed it. We wanted to thank the PE teachers and the Specialist team who organise and plan our carnivals. It has been so fun to be at carnivals all together again this year.

The Year 6 grade are all excited to start their inquiry to support Market Day next term. Students are anticipating all the fun options of stalls and delicious food they can make and sell to raise money for the Year 6 graduation! There will be loads more information to come about this awesome student led event.

Students have been working hard to demonstrate Amaroo School’s PBL values. This term primary students earnt a whole school PBL reward for being amazing ‘Learners’.  Students were given the opportunity to vote on the reward and chose a fun filled movie afternoon which took place  in Week 7. There were some amazing movie character costumes on the day. We had lots of fun celebrating by watching a movie with our classes.
In Primary School this Semester we have given out 828 bronze awards with 127 students achieving against all four PBL values and receiving a Bronze Overall Award. We have also earnt 88 silver awards so far. That’s huge!
It has been fun running lunchtime clubs for students in Primary. The Sports Captains and the School Captains will be changing up clubs and sporting activities for students to enjoy in Semester 2.

We would like to wish everyone a fun school holiday break. See you next term!

Levi and Laura
