LEARNING SPOTLIGHT - YEAR 4
Welcome to our Week 10 ‘Learning spotlight’! Each newsletter we will feature a ‘learning spotlight’ from one of our grades across primary. We will share with you their words and reflections of why the learning we do at school is important and why it matters. Join me in celebrating our students' thinking about their learning.
Student interview - Emily G from 4LBT
Learning area - Inquiry
What have you been learning about?
In Inquiry this term we have been learning about different types of materials used in sports. We have been doing lots of activities involving looking at different materials and what they are used for. Our teachers have been helping us to research and also helping us to ‘fact check’ whether our information is correct or not. Some of the activities we have done are looking at what different types of balls used in sports have been made out of and their properties, and also looking at how materials in sport have evolved over time.
Why is this learning important?
If we join a specific industry for our jobs in the future we already know what different materials are made out of. We can also check whether materials are eco safe or not. It also helps us to recognise why different materials are used for different purposes.
How did you take this learning further?
By researching further. We researched lots of different materials and their uses rather than just the ones being used in sports. We have a good understanding of why different materials are used for items in our world and their properties. Our teachers have been very helpful.

LEARNING SPOTLIGHT - LANGUAGES
Greetings, fellow language enthusiasts! We are thrilled to share with you the latest exciting endeavours taking place in our language classrooms. Students have embarked on a remarkable journey, fusing culinary delights and artistic expression to bring a taste of Japan and a burst of colour to our beloved languages building.
In a heart-warming collaboration, students from various language classes joined forces to immerse themselves in Japanese culture and celebrate their shared passion for art. Together, they gathered in the armed with their aprons, paintbrushes, and, of course, the essential ingredients for making Japanese rice balls, also known as onigiri.
Under the guidance of Ms Middleton, Ms Laird and Ms Hodson, the students ventured into the world of Japanese cuisine. They learned about the significance of rice in Japanese culture and the artistry involved in crafting these delightful treats. Armed with this newfound knowledge, they embraced the challenge, eagerly rolling rice in their hands and creating bite-sized masterpieces.
JAPANESE RICE BALL RECIPE
Ingredients:
- 2 cups Japanese sushi rice
- 2 1/4 cups water
- 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- Fillings of your choice (e.g., pickled plum, grilled salmon, cooked vegetables, or seasoned seaweed)
Instructions:
- Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Drain well.
- In a medium saucepan, combine the rinsed rice and water. Let it sit for 30 minutes to allow the rice to absorb some of the water.
- Cover the saucepan with a tight-fitting lid and bring the rice to a boil over high heat. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 15 minutes. Remove from heat and let it sit, covered, for an additional 10 minutes.
- While the rice is cooking, prepare the seasoning mixture by combining rice vinegar, sugar, and salt in a small bowl. Stir until the sugar and salt dissolve.
- Transfer the cooked rice to a large bowl and drizzle the seasoning mixture over it. Mix gently and thoroughly to evenly distribute the seasoning.
- Allow the rice to cool slightly until it's comfortable to handle.
- Moisten your hands with water to prevent sticking. Take a small handful of rice and gently shape it into a triangle or round shape, creating a hollow in the centre.
- Add your preferred filling into the hollowed centre of the rice and gently fold the rice over it, ensuring the filling is fully enclosed.
- Repeat the process with the remaining rice and fillings.
Your delicious Japanese rice balls are ready to be enjoyed! Serve them fresh or wrap them in seaweed for an added touch of authenticity.
Alongside their culinary adventures, these creative students also dedicated their artistic talents to transforming a plain wall in the languages building into a vibrant mural. Inspired by the diversity of languages taught within the department, the mural captures the essence of global communication, with colourful imagery and empowering messages.

SCHOOL CAPTAINS REPORT
Hi everyone! Laura and Levi here. We wanted to congratulate everyone on their learning and achievements over the semester. It is crazy how fast the term has passed. Academic reports went home by email on Friday last week. This week all families are invited to come to school with their child/children and talk with their classroom teacher about their learning. These are called Student Led Conferences. At Amaroo, we, the students, want to demonstrate how we are responsible for our effort in learning. In these conferences we share the learning that we are most proud of and discuss the areas we want to improve in.
Throughout this term all students from P-6 researched and unpacked concepts about Sustainability. This is reflected in our learning environments which you may have seen when you visited classrooms this week. Students in P-6 have been learning about how to help and save our environment, water usage, animal habitats, conservation, changes to the Earth’s surface and creating sustainable items to improve the school’s impact on the environment.
Term 2 saw the completion of all school based carnivals as well as regional and ACT. Amaroo School had 51 represented at zone carnivals. Well done! Our Cross Country held here at school was a big hit and everyone enjoyed it. We wanted to thank the PE teachers and the Specialist team who organise and plan our carnivals. It has been so fun to be at carnivals all together again this year.
The Year 6 grade are all excited to start their inquiry to support Market Day next term. Students are anticipating all the fun options of stalls and delicious food they can make and sell to raise money for the Year 6 graduation! There will be loads more information to come about this awesome student led event.
Students have been working hard to demonstrate Amaroo School’s PBL values. This term primary students earnt a whole school PBL reward for being amazing ‘Learners’. Students were given the opportunity to vote on the reward and chose a fun filled movie afternoon which took place in Week 7. There were some amazing movie character costumes on the day. We had lots of fun celebrating by watching a movie with our classes.
In Primary School this Semester we have given out 828 bronze awards with 127 students achieving against all four PBL values and receiving a Bronze Overall Award. We have also earnt 88 silver awards so far. That’s huge!
It has been fun running lunchtime clubs for students in Primary. The Sports Captains and the School Captains will be changing up clubs and sporting activities for students to enjoy in Semester 2.
We would like to wish everyone a fun school holiday break. See you next term!
Levi and Laura
